The thyroid is a small gland, shaped like a butterfly, located in the lower part of your neck. The function of the thyroid is to secret hormones that regulate metabolic activity. When the thyroid is healthy, metabolic homeostasis is maintained; that is, heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, alertness, and the rate at which the body uses energy are all within the normal range. Certain nutrients are essential for healthy thyroid function. The most important of these are the amino acid L-Tyrosine and iodine, both of which need to be available in order to synthesize thyroid hormones. In addition, B Vitamins (B6, Folate, and B12) and trace minerals (Zinc, Copper, and Selenium) are necessary for proper thyroid function.*
