Silymarin, an extract of milk thistle, is composed of a family of flavonoids, primarily Silybin with smaller amounts of Silydianin and Silychristin. Milk thistle is a flowering herb that has been used by herbalists for hundreds of years. Silymarin, which is extracted from its seeds, is the active part of the herb. Proper liver health is vital for human beings. The liver is the largest gland in the body. It plays a key role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body including glycogen storage, plasma protein synthesis, and drug detoxification. The liver also produces bile, which is critical for proper digestion. Milk thistle appears to concentrate its main action in the liver. It is well recognized for being a hepatoprotectant (liver protecting agent) and has been shown to increase the liver's content of glutathione.* Glutathione is a cellular antioxidant that helps to reduce the damaging effect of free radicals and supports healthy detoxification processes.
