Vitamin C is best known as a highly effective antioxidant that can protect the body's cells and molecules from damage by free radicals. Its role as an antioxidant has tended to obscure its other physiologic functions. This vitamin is required for the synthesis of collagen, a structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and bone. Vitamin C is also required for the synthesis of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, as well as for the production of L-carnitine, which is required for the transport of fats into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation.
