Lychee (Litchi chinensis) is an ancient fruit with a royal and romantic history that goes back more than 2,000 years. Native to China and southeast Asia, rich, luscious lychee was a coveted delicacy of the Chinese Imperial courts and in great demand. In fact, Royal messengers would travel 600 miles to stock lychee for T’ang Dynasty Emperor Hsüan-tsung (Li Longji). This was to ensure his concubine, the lovely Lady Yang Kuei Fei, had a fresh supply of the delightful fruit for her daily diet. It was said her great beauty was in part due to her healthy diet, including lychee.
