…, H Max, HHL Caplets, HCFRR Caplets, HRRR Caplets - Reactions, 2009 - Springer

Hydroxycut products have been withdrawn from the US1, 2 and Canadian3 markets following reports of serious adverse reactions associated with their use. The manufacturer of Hydroxycut products, Iovate Health Sciences, has agreed to recall these products. The FDA has received 23 reports of adverse reactions among Hydroxycut recipients, who were aged 21–51 years. 1 The reported events included asymptomatic hyperbilirubinaemia, liver injury, jaundice, liver transplant and death (one report). No other cause for liver disorders was identified and most of these cases had no preexisting medical condition that would predispose them to liver injury. In addition to the liver disorders, the FDA identified cases of seizures, rhabdomyolysis and cardiovascular disorders associated with the use of Hydroxycut products. The 14 products that have been withdrawn from the market are: Hydroxycut Natural, Hydroxycut Carb Control, Hydroxycut 24, Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed, Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink), Hydroxycut Liquid Shots, Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets, Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix), Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets, Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets, Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets, Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets, Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets, and Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets. The FDA says that it has not yet determined which ingredients, dosages or other health-related factors may be associated with risks associated with Hydroxycut products; 2 these products contain a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts. The agency has advised consumers to stop using these products and to consult their healthcare professionals if they experience symptoms associated with their use. The President and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, Steve Mister, commended the FDA for warning consumers of a" potential safety problem associated with these products", and supported Iovate’s decision to recall the products. 4In light of US FDA’s warning, Health Canada too has advised consumers not to use Hydroxycut products due to a potential risk to their health. 3 The agency has received 17 domestic reports of adverse reactions associated with use of Hydroxycut products in Canada. The reported events included disorders of cardiovascular, respiratory, GI and neurological systems; however, no cases of liver injury were reported. Hydroxycut products are not authorised for sale in Canada. Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink), Hydroxycut Natural and Hydroxycut Carb Control are not currently sold in the Canadian market.
