Magnesium Forms Explained: Oxide, Citrate, and Glycinate

The magnesium form on a label affects how much elemental magnesium you get. Here is how the common forms compare.

Supplement labels list magnesium as a compound such as magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, or magnesium glycinate. The form matters because the listed amount usually refers to elemental magnesium, but the compound determines how well it dissolves.

Magnesium oxide contains a high percentage of elemental magnesium by weight but is less soluble. Magnesium citrate and glycinate contain less elemental magnesium per gram but are often chosen for tolerability.

Check the Supplement Facts panel for the elemental amount in milligrams and its %DV, which is based on a 420 mg reference. The form is typically shown in parentheses next to the word magnesium.
